Tasked with creating a box which would hold ideas, interests, and works created based around collage and assemblage I chose to use the computer screen as my box. This comes form my strong links with computer programming in the past and a few of my current ideas within my practice currently. Looking into how a computer would process and define a landscape.
I captured various bits of footage from a trip to the peaks, using mainly 4 filmic landscapes I created a video. Taking ideas from the way I use a roller in printmaking to divide a landscape into 4 segments and an inspirational film piece I saw in Berlin; I decided to split the video into 4 segments in which one segment of each piece will be played. I used my knowledge of mathematical combinations and produced the 24 different possible outcomes. Finding that in one of these 24 combinations the horizon line of the landscapes all met was the defining point of my inquiry. I utilized this by making it seem as though something or someone was sorting through the segments until it found one that worked or was definable as a true landscape. Within this search the film produces 24 different collages of the same four short videos. I used the instrumental to a song I had been listening to on the day of the walk as the audio for the piece.
Reflecting upon the outcome of the work there is key areas to improve on but also ideas which could be used more effectively. Some of the videos were difficult to work with as I had not used a tripod to capture the footage, so the shake was hard to remove without effecting solidity of the segments. Using harsher or more electronic audio for the work would have created the feeling I was looking for in the finished piece more effectively as the viewer does not share my same sense of nostalgia within the current audio. However All in all the work engaged me with something I hadn’t attempted before which was an form of artist video or film editing and has reengaged my practice with collage and has given me ideas and thoughts to hold onto and use in my practice.
